Players in the 2005 MLB Draft
RHP
James Avery of Niagara University, NCAA Division 1, was
selected in the 5th round of the Major League Draft by the Cincinnati
Reds. Avery is the son of Brent and Corrie Avery of Moose
Jaw, Sask. Before attending Niagara on a baseball scholarship, Avery
was a 5 year member of the Calgary
Dawgs Youth Club and was slated to make his
last amateur start for the Dawgs’ summer collegiate team this
summer.
In his years with the Dawgs
development team, Avery starred with the club at showcase tournaments
throughout Canada and the United States, including top prospect
events in Florida, California and Arizona. Avery also was selected
to Canada’s Junior National Team and had been drafted by the
Minnesota Twins out of high school.
Reed Eastley, also of Niagara University was selected
in the 13th round by the Seattle Mariners. Eastley,
From Brandon, Manitoba was a standout at third base for the Dawgs
during the 2003 season.
Also selected in the 2005 draft was LHP Aric Van Gaalen
who starred with Dawgs
youth team for 2 years. Van Gaalen was selected by the Mariners
in the 30th round.
These three join several Dawgs
players to be drafted over the years. In past years that long list
includes Jim Henderson (Washington Nationals),

Richardson (Milwaukee Brewers), John Hurd
(Chicago White Sox), Tanner Osberg (New York Mets),
Tyler Klippenstein (Oakland As), Adam Burton

Roberts (New York Mets), Jeff MacDonald
(Colorado Rockies), David Parker (L.A. Dodgers).
