Dawgs Garner Baseball America Pre-Season Selections

Calgary Dawgs players, Sophomore Vince Ircandia (SS/2B) and Freshman James Avery of the Niagara University Purple Eagles were named Players to Watch by Baseball America in the magazine’s annual college issue. NU competes in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference of NCAA, Division 1.

Ircandia is coming off an outstanding freshman season when he batted .341 with 3 home runs and led the Eagles in numerous offensive categories. He was twice named Conference and Canadian Slam, Player of the Week after hitting for the cycle in his final game of the season culminated with a two run, two out, walk off home run. He also was selected Freshman All America (Hon. Mention) by Louisville Sluggers’ Collegiate Baseball Magazine.

Avery promises to be one of the mainstays on the Dawgs pitching staff this summer. After 5 years playing on a Calgary Dawgs Youth Team that featured several players drafted in the Major League Draft and numerous others earning scholarships to American colleges and universities, James was selected by the Minnesota in the 2002 draft. He went on to star with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships before accepting a scholarship to play for Coach Mike McRae at Niagara. James is tabbed by Baseball America as a “Top Newcomer” in NCAA, Division 1.
