Dawgs' Grad Grabs Florida League Honors

Longtime Calgary Dawgs youth player, James Avery was recently named Pitcher of the Week in the High A, Florida State League. Avery was a standout with the Niagara University Purple Eagles before being selected by the Cincinati Reds in the 5th round of Major League Baseball's amateur draft in 2005.

According to the Florida State League office in Daytona Beach, James Avery has been named the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 3rd - 9th.

Avery, a proud product of Moose Jaw, SK, Canada, tossed 13 shutout innings last week. In doing so, the 22-year old earned back-to-back wins for the first time this season. On Monday, Avery hurled six scoreless frames against the Lakeland Tigers. On Sunday, he fired a complete game seven-inning shutout agains the Ft. Myers Miracle.

Avery becomes just the fourth player in Sarasota Reds history to win the award and the first as a pitcher.
