DAWGS BOLSTER LINEUP

The Dawgs are pleased to announce the signing of 2 Canadian born, Left Handed pitchers (Matt Ircandia, LHP, Fr, Washington State University and Geoff Freeborn, LHP, Jr. Northern Kentucky University), an import catcher, Mark Bomar (Jr., Niagara University, New York) and another native Calgarian, outfielder, Will Gardner (Fr., OF, Prairie Baseball Academy, Lethbridge).

Matt Ircandia, a 6’3”, 186 lb, LHP, is a native Calgarian who starred with the Calgary Dawgs youth team, played with Team Alberta and Canada’s Jr National Team. Ircandia was drafted out of high school by the San Francisco Giants in the June, 2002 Major League Draft but chose to accept a scholarship to Washington State University, of the Pac 10 Conf. NCAA, Div 1. WSU head coach Tim Mooney had this to say about Ircandia who has been clocked at 88 mph: “Matt is a LHP with a very high ceiling…if he continues to improve he could be one of the top guys in the Pac-10”.

Geoff Freeborn, a 6’4”, 185 lb, LHP, is another native Calgarian who is currently playing with Northern Kentucky University of NCAA, Div 2. Geoff has starred with Team Alberta, Team Canada’s Jr. National Team and is a member of the Great Britain Sr. National Team for this year’s European Championship. He played junior college baseball with Lassen College in California and the College of Northern Idaho before accepting his scholarship to Kentucky. In the past 2 summers Geoff has played with the Kelowna Falcons of the PIL and the Melville Millionaires of the WMBL.

Mark Bomar; is a 5’11”, 215 lb catcher who hails from Austin, Texas. Mark played on the Texas State championship team out of high school and brings that same desire to win to the field every day. Mark is a senior on scholarship to Niagara University, New York, Metro Atlantic Conference of NCAA, Div 1. “Mark is an outstanding defensive catcher with a 1.87 pop to pop time in throwing out runners attempting to steal 2nd. He also has significant power potential at the plate and is lighting it up at fall workouts at NU”.

Will Gardner: currently playing with one of Canada’s premier, college baseball programs, the Prairie Baseball Academy and enrolled at Lethbridge Community College, Will is a 5’10”, 200 lb outfielder who played two seasons with the Calgary Dawgs Youth Team and was part of Team Alberta’s entry in the Western Canada Summer Games in August, 2000. Head Coach Blair Kubicek of the PBA has described Will as one of his all-time hardest working players who continues to show improvement each year. Hitting from the right side Will brings right side power to an already strong Dawgs’ outfield.

Again the Dawgs are excited to attract such high level left handed pitchers to an already strong bullpen and feel the acquisition of two more, quality position players will strengthen the team.
