Dawgs welcome Schmidt, Calderon from Mesa, AZ

Calgary Dawgs Baseball Club bolstered their pitching and their offence by signing LHP Paul Schmidt and 3B/OF, Julian Calderon of Mesa Junior College in Mesa, Arizona. Dawgs Manager and Head Coach, David Robb assists with the Mesa club and is extremely pleased to add a quality pitcher like Paul Schmidt and a proven hitter like Julian Calderon to the defending WMBL Champions

Paul Schmidt is a 6’1”, 200 lb. sophomore LHP who hails from Las Vegas, Nevada and is projected to be one of the go to guys on the Thunderbirds pitching staff during the 2005 college season. Mesa is the defending champion of the very tough Arizona Community College Conference and in 2004 earned a trip to the JUCO World Series. Paul brings a mid 80s fastball with serious movement and a 3 pitch repertoire that will see him battle for a starter spot in the on the Dawgs rotation this summer.

Julian Calderon is a 6’2”, 185 lb. sophomore 3B/Of who can play effectively at both corner positions of the infield. Julian makes him home in Phoenix, Arizona and is expected to be a key run producer in the line-up of Head Coach Tony Cirelli and the Mesa Thunderbirds. Calderon is a 6.8 sec./60 yard guy who will be another stolen base threat for the Dawgs. He can hit with power and could be a serious offensive threat in the middle of the Dawgs order as the team defends its 2004 WMBL Championship.

Dawgs are thrilled to showcase these 2 excellent players from Mesa, Arizona. Paul Schmidt gives us 3 or 4 legitimate LHPs, all with plus stuff and Julian Calderon gives us a versatile defensive player who can produce allot of runs. Add these guys to the strong core of players already on the 2005 roster and we feel pretty good about taking a run at defending our WMBL Championship.”
