Dawgs Tap Niagara Talent Pool

Calgary Dawgs continued to add to the 2005 pitching staff by adding 3 pitchers from the roster of new Head Coach Chris Chernisky of Niagara University in Lewiston, New York. In addition, the Dawgs are pleased to announce that versatile infielder Andrew MacNevin, one of Niagara’s top offensive threats will also join the Dawgs this summer. NU is a NCAA, Division 1 school which finished 2nd in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Association this past season and has been a consistent source of talent for the Dawgs over the past two seasons. Middle infielders Vince Ircandia, a former Freshman All American, and Reed Eastley both came to the Dawgs as All Conference Players before earning WMBL All Star honors in 2003 along with Purple Eagle team-mate Marc Bomar who also earned 1st team catching honors in an outstanding 2003 summer collegiate season.

For the 2005 summer season, the Dawgs look forward to what will likely be the last amateur starts for top Canadian pro prospect, RHP James Avery. Avery is a 6’1”, 210 lb. fireballer from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan who starred over 5 seasons with the Dawgs Youth Team earning a stint at the World Junior Championships with Canada’s Junior National Team. Avery was drafted off the Dawgs out of high school by the Minnesota Twins but chose to accept a scholarship to Niagara. Avery re-enters the Major League Draft this summer as a junior and coming off 2 summers in the Cape Cod League is ranked the #1 professional prospect in the MAAC this coming season. Dawgs are thrilled to add Avery and his mid 90s fastball to the starting roster for 2005.

Also joining the Dawgs from Niagara is Left Handed Pitcher, Ryan Virtue. Virtue is a 6’3”, 195 lb. sophomore LHP from Stittsville, Ontario. Ryan had an outstanding freshman year posting a 6-3 record for the Purple Eagles during the 2004 college season. He features a fastball in the mid 80s with excellent control of his offspeed pitches. Virtue could be effective as a starter or in relief for the Dawgs and with his outstanding ball movement will match up well against left hand hitters. Dawgs are very pleased to add a pitcher of Ryan’s quality to the 2005 roster.

Dawgs also are pleased to announce the signing of LHP Matt Ircandia. Ircandia is a 6’3” 205 lb. LHP who starred with the Calgary Dawgs Youth Team before earning stints with Team Alberta and Canada’s Junior National Team. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the 2002 amateur draft of Major League Baseball but accepted a scholarship to Washington State University before transferring to NU. Last season as a freshman, Ircandia posted a 1-0 record with 19 strikeouts over 18 innings pitched while holding opposing hitters to a .227 average.

Andrew MacNevin also joins the Dawgs for the 2005 summer collegiate season. MacNevin is a 6’ 200 lb. infielder who hails from St. Catherine’s, PEI and signed with Niagara after enjoying productive stints with Team PEI at the Canada Cup Showcase as well as Canada’s Junior National Team. At Niagara, MacNevin has started since his freshman year. During the 2004 college season MacNevin batted .286 with 6 HRs, 35 runs scored and 35 RBIs. Andrew is a proven Div. 1 left handed bat with power who can bat in the middle of the order. He also has demonstrated valuable versatility by playing most infield positions and catching.

Dawgs are thrilled to showcase these exceptional players for Calgary baseball fans and feel that with the strong core of players joining the 2005 roster, the club is poised to take a run at defending its WMBL Championship.
