infielders Mark Capone and Davey Wallace
of the UBC Thunderbirds, NAIA national contenders as well as the
return of RHPs David McElroy of Centenary College
in Louisiana and Jeff Casagrande of Stony Brook
University in New York.
Mark
Capone: Dawgs
are very pleased to sign Mark Capone, a 5’9”, 160 lb.
middle infielder with the UBC Thunderbirds. Capone led UBC in hitting
during the 2004 season batting an impressive .364 with a team leading
55 runs scored, 16 doubles, 3 triples, 3 home runs, 47 RBIs and
an on base % of .445. Mark can flat out hit. Following his break
through season, Mark was selected to Team Canada for the USA/Canada
Friendship Series in Durham, N.C. and the World University Games
in Taiwan. Mark hails from Etobicoke, Ontario where he starred with
the Etobicoke Rangers before joining UBC.
Davey
Wallace: Calgary Dawgs
also add outstanding middle infielder Davey Wallace to the club’s
2005 roster. Wallace is a 5’10” 175 lb. sophomore on
the roster of Coach Terry McKaig and the UBC Thunderbirds. The T
Birds have, over the past 4 years, consistently challenged for the
NAIA Western Regional Championship and a spot in the NAIA World
Series. In the 2004 college season Wallace batted .257 with 2 home
runs, 21 RBIs and 42 runs scored. Before joining the Thunderbirds,
Wallace starred with the Ontario Blue Jays. Wallace brings outstanding
defence and a solid bat to the Dawgs
line-up.
David
McElroy: Re-joining the Dawgs
for his 3rd summer collegiate season is 6’2”, 215 lb.
RHP David McElroy. Mac hails from Victoria, B.C. and is currently
playing in Louisiana on the roster of the Centenary College Gents
of the Mid Continent Conference, NCAA, Division 1. Prior to receiving
his scholarship to Centenary, David starred at the Prairie Baseball
Academy leading the team to the BC Junior College Championship in
2004. McElroy had outstanding outings with the Dawgs
over the past 2 seasons and was particularly effective out of the
bullpen during the WMBL Championship series when the Dawgs
defeated the Swift Current Indians to claim the 2004 WMBL Title.
Jeff
Casagrande: Also returning to the Dawgs
bullpen is hard-throwing RHP, Jeff Casagrande of Stony Brook University
in New York. Stony Brook is a member of the America East Conference
of NCAA, Division 1. Jeff is a 6’3”, 190 lb. pitcher
who was raised in Lasalle, Ontario. Casa was All Conference as a
freshman and 2nd Team, All Region as a sophomore. He brings a high
80s plus fastball together with a sharp breaking slider to the Dawgs
pitching staff. Casagrande was on the mound in relief during the
Dawgs championship
victory against Swift Current in 2004.
“Dawgs
are thrilled to add 4 more quality players to the 2005 roster. We
have always had an outstanding middle infield over the years with
the likes of WMBL All Stars, Vince Ircandia, Reed Eastley, Rob Recuenco
and Aaron Jamieson. Our middle in 2005 will be every bit as exciting
with the signing of Capone and Wallace. These guys are used to playing
together and Calgary fans are going to love watching them. Capone
also has proven himself to be one of the top college hitters in
the country.”
“Getting McElroy and Casagrande back on our pitching staff
is also a huge plus. Both guys are capable of being starters and
in 2004 proved how effective they can be coming out of the bullpen.
It is super getting back 2 pitchers who were instrumental in our
2004 undefeated championship run.”
